5-inch Schedule 40 Steel Pipe Bollards
ABOUT THE 5″ SCH 40
Light Duty Bollard: Not to be used to stop vehicles.
5-inch Schedule 40 Steel Pipe Bollards have a 0.258″ thick wall and can be used for non-critical, lighter duty bollard applications. Installed well, these may have some vehicle stopping benefits at very low speeds, but should generally not be used where any stopping capability is a concern. For stopping vehicles, we recommend a minimum of 6″ Schedule 40 or possibly the 5″ Schedule 80 pipe. At only 117 lbs for an 8-footer, they can be set into place with a single worker by hand.
To increase impact strength of any bollard pipe, add a couple vertical sticks of rebar into bollard when filling with concrete.
IS 5″ AN ODD SIZE?
If you have concerns that 5-inch is an odd size to find bollard covers for, don’t worry unless you want decorative bollard covers. We have 1/4″ thick 5″ dome top covers. If you want something decorative, you would have to use a 6″ bollard cover with a steel insert that is available. But, if the point of using 5″ over 6″ was to save money, but you want a decorative covered look, then we advise that you use the 6-inch Schedule 40 Pipe because that will be cheaper than the 5-inch pipe plus steel insert.

GENERAL APPLICATIONS: The 5″ SCH 80 Pipe:
- may be used as protection for objects or building corners from collision by lighter weight machinery, but not vehicles, not even economy cars.
- may be used as visual cues to drivers for traffic control where, if omitted by collsion, does not present greater problems than if it did not exist.
- SHOULD NOT be used to protect people, or anything else for that matter, from vehicle impacts, even at low speeds.
- SHOULD NOT be used as a barricade or for building entrance protection.
AS A BARRICADE: Not advisable. At minumum, use a 6-inch Schedule 40 pipe or maybe the 5″ Schedule 80 pipe. To have more certainty in a barrier’s stopping force, it is advised to use an impact-rated bollard system such as the C40, K4 or K12.
VARIETIES: ASTM A500 Carbon Steel Pipe is the common go-to choice for bollards. Although, it is sometimes sufficient to use a structural grade untested pipe. Of course, we also offer pipe that meets various prescribed ASTM and ASME standards. See “Pipe Varieties” below.

PIPE VARIETIES
This Pipe may be available in the following types and grades:
Electric resistance weld (ERW), seamless (SMLS), and double submerged arc weld (DSAW) in all published schedules and walls, Grades ASTM A-500 GR A & GR B, ASTM A-53 GR B, ASME SA-53 GR B, ASTM A-106 GR B, ASME SA-106 GR B, AP1 5L X-GRADES, ASTM A-252 GR 1, 2, AND 3, ASTM A-139 GR B, and ASTM A-501.
UNTESTED PIPE VARIANT
This pipe may also be available as untested pipe without an ASTM rating. It is then referred to by Diameter and Wall Thickness only; no Schedule #, Standard, XH or XXH etc. Untested pipe can be much cheaper, and is often perfectly fine for bollard applications since the testing is really about pressure testing; how much PSI the pipe can withstand when filled with a pressurized liquid or gas. Bollards are just filled with concrete, so PSI ratings are generally not applicable. Their may be a small or negligable weakness in terms of bollard strength associated with untested pipe.
