Base Plate Bollards vs In-Ground Bollards
For economy, these Surface Mounted Bollards are often preferred over In-Ground Bollard Pipe Installation wherever digging footings is prohibitive or in-ground strength is overkill. IMPORTANT: In-Ground Installed Bollard Pipes are certainly recommended over Base-Plate Bollards to the degree that protection from errant vehicles is critical.

Heavy Duty Base Plate Bollards
Fabricated in the U.S. with U.S. Steel
These Base Plate Bollards are made from US Steel pipe and most often, covered in a Thermoplastic Polyethylene with Ultra-Violet and Anti-Static Additives Bollard Cover. These “Bumper Posts” are useful for protection around warehouses, facilities, buildings, drive-thrus etc.
Sizes and Colors
We offer four different bollard diameters, in many heights, all of which will come covered with either a 1/8″ or 1/4″ Dome Top Bollard Cover, available in many colors. Bollard covers are not required, although we strongly recommend them because they extend the life of the bollard and you never have to paint again.
Finishes
Whether covered or not, these bollards are available in Raw, Galvanized, Primed, Finished Coat and Powder Coated options. Note that Galvanized should not be painted, as it doesn’t hold paint very well.
What to Choose?
MOST ECONOMICAL INDOOR BOLLARD OPTION: The most economical option for indoor applications is to get the bollard in raw steel or primed steel and then simply cover with the bollard sleeve. If you get raw or primed, we suggest you at least finish coat the base plate with enamel for best appearance.
MOST DURABLE OUTDOOR BOLLARD OPTION: The most durable option is a galvanized steel base plate bollard covered with a bollard sleeve. Otherwise, we suggest finish coated or primed. If just primed, we suggest you at least finish coat the base plate with enamel for best rust prevention.
Base Plate Bollards are also known as Bumper Posts, Surface Mount Bollards, Welded Plate Bollards and Bolt Down Bollards to name a few.
Our 4″, 5″, 6″ and 8″ Diameters are Thick-Walled
DON’T GET THIN-WALLED BY PACKAGING STORES.
Our pipe walls are thicker than commonly offered by thrift bollard suppliers around the internet.
Our Base Plate Bollards are available in 4-inch, 5-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch diameters. All of these diameters are SCHEDULE 40 PIPE (aka SCH40).
Steel Pipe Outer Diameters (OD)
4″ Bollard OD: 4 1/2″ (4.5 inches)
5″ Bollard OD: 5 9/16″ (5.563 inches)
6″ Bollard OD: 6 5/8″ (6.625 inches)
8″ Bollard OD: 8 5/8″ (8.625 inches)
Quick Read: If you don’t understand why OD is larger than nominal pipe sizes. READ THIS.
Base Plate Bollard Heights
Standard heights for all diameters include 27”, 36”, 42”, 48”, and 52”. Custom heights are available and all heights come with corresponding bollard cover height.
Choosing the Best Height
In general, the higher the better for visibility.
If bollards are in a vehicle traffic area, then 48″ or taller is recommended for visibility through a windshield, rear window, or mirrors.
If bollards are inside a warehouse or similar, then the bollards might be 36″ to 52″ depending on application. Around forklifts you want to be able to see easily.
If bollards are in a purely pedestrian environment with no vehicles present, you might go as low as 36″.
Want extra height? If you want extra height for best visibility, you can get bollard covers that go a foot or two higher than the bollard pipe, provided the upper unsupported section of the cover does not see any abuse.
